Dubai International Airport United Arab Emirates
|Description||Dubai International Airport|
|Challenge||To develop an innovative formwork and shoring concept|
Nowhere is economic growth more apparent than at Dubai International Airport, located on the east side of the city, approximately 4 km from the original city centre. It was opened in 1960 with a single 1,800 m long runway, but on a site that was specifically chosen for its capacity for expansion. In 2002, a $4.1 billion expansion programme was initiated to increase capacity at the airport to 70 million. That programme included construction of Terminal 3, concourse 2 and concourse 3, making the airport capable of accommodating the extra passengers while also handling the latest breed of “Super-Jets”.Terminal 3 in Dubai is one of the largest airport terminals in the world.
The challenge was to develop an innovative formwork and shoring concept for an unusually-shaped building with very large dimensions and varying ceiling heights. The vast dimensions of this building project required a high level of technical and organizational expertise. The work involved creating a formwork area in excess of one million square meters, including 2.2 m thick floor panels and with ceilings up to 16 m high. SGB selected GASS® as our shoring system. This is one of the most advanced systems of its kind, already used in a multitude of major projects. During a period of 30 months we delivered over 5,000 tonnes of this high-strength, easy-touse aluminium shoring system, together with all the necessary accessories. A specialist team was based on site working in close contact with our central planning and design operation.
